Brenda at Happy Floors Inc did an absolutely incredible job restoring our 300-year-old original wood floors. We found her through two separate word-of-mouth recommendations– both individuals praised her exceptional work on historic homes. The first thing that impressed us about Brenda was her wealth of knowledge. When she came to inspect our house and offer a quote, she pointed out the different woods that were used throughout– and one of them, pumpkin pine, is so old that it has actually gone extinct! She described in detail the way floors would have been finished in 1700s when our house was built. And she presented a detailed plan to replicate those methods. She suggested using Tung oil, rather than a polyurethane finish. She explained how important it would be to hand-sand the floors to preserve the historic character of the wood, the natural dips and contours that have developed over the centuries. Using a big machine would flatten out the contours and destroy the historic character of the floors, and Brenda was committed to respecting the historicity of the house. (As a side note, the other person we were considering, who came highly recommended, showed no consideration for the history of the house and insisted that using a huge machine sander was the only way to go– no, thank you!) Brenda’s quote was extremely reasonable. With the help of two workers, she completed the work on schedule and with admirable attention to detail. She was thoughtful and communicative, and always easy to reach. Our hand-sanded, Tung-oil restored floors are absolutely lustrous, and always draw amazed ooh and aahs from visitors.
